One of the best parts of the eSports world is that new games come out constantly and you never know what the next big game will be. While traditional sports will always be the same, with football, basketball, baseball, soccer, etc., eSports rise and fall. This is a quick guide to the most popular eSports today.
League of Legends – Riot Games
League of Legends is basically always the most watched eSport on the most used streaming site in America, twitch.tv, unless Dota 2 or Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (both on this list) are streaming a major tournament. League of Legends is a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (Moba) Game released back in October 2009. It currently has over 100 million monthly players across the globe, making it the most played game of all time. It is ranked second in prize money awarded at $37 million, and is still rising in viewership and playerbase.
Dota 2 – Valve Corporation
Dota 2 is another major eSport, but its casual streaming success is not super great. During major tournaments, it always tops the charts on twitch.tv. The original Dota was actually a community-made modification to Warcraft III, but Valve decided to make a standalone version as a sequel which was published in 2013. Like League of Legends, it is also a Multiplayer Online Battle Arena Game. Dota 2 has about 13 million monthly players and has the highest prize money awarded at a whopping $95 million.
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – Valve Corporation
Counter-Strike Global Offensive is the most watched First-Person Shooter (FPS) on twitch.tv developed by Valve Corporation and released in 2012. It is the fourth installment of the Counter-Strike franchise, which began with the release of Counter-Strike in 1999. It is ranked third in total prize money at $20 million, and has a monthly playerbase of about 10 million. The game is the premier FPS among PC eSports and is played world-wide.
Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft – Blizzard Entertainment
Hearthstone is a Digital Collectible Card Game based on the Warcraft universe. Players collect cards and build decks to face one another. Hearthstone was released in 2014 and has put out new expansions several times a year since then. It has the sixth most prize money awarded at $7.5 million. Hearthstone has over 50 million active players, and that is greatly thanks due to it being available for mobile devices. Most of the game’s players are casual gamers on their phones. Like the rest of the list, it is frequently at the top of the charts on twitch.tv.
Other Popular Games
While these are the current top eSports, other very popular games include Overwatch, Smite, Starcraft II, Call of Duty, Heroes of the Storm and Super Smash Brothers Melee. It is good to be well-rounded when starting a career in eSports, but you definitely should not try to follow them all.
